| What does the word Islam
mean? The word Islam is an Arabic word. It is a noun that refers to
the mental and physical acts of submission to Allah and His teachings.
The word "Muslim" is an Arabic word derived from the Arabic past verb "aslama" that means "he has accepted Islam." The Qur'an has used the word Muslim for the prophet Ebrahim (Abraham) as well. |
| Who is Allah? Allah
is the supreme being who has created the entire universe. He has also
created man and has sent revelations, scriptures and inspiration to
those whom He has selected to be His prophets to mankind. We refer to Him
with the masculine pronoun but He is void of gender. Allah is high in the
heavens and has a form that is unknown to us. We cannot ascribe any
partners to Him. He alone governs the entire known and unknown galaxies.
He is beyond the perception of humans. Our rational minds cannot fathom
His nature. His knowledge is absolute and comprehensive over all matter.
He does not sleep and neither slumbers. All planets rotate and exist
through His command. He has created man and Jinn to worship Him. Allah has
many attributes which have eternally remained with Him. These attributes
are reflected in the ninety-nine other names of Allah, each of which,
reflects an attribute. All the Masaajid are referred to as the homes of Allah but this does not imply that He lives therein. |
| Where do converts or those interested in Islam go for acquisition of Islamic education? |
| Is Islam an Indian religion? No. There are many Indians and Pakistanis who are Muslim because their great grand parents have adopted Islam centuries ago. Islam entered India through Asia. India was later politically split into two different countries - i.e. India and Pakistan. Islam, as a religion that was spread from Arabia, has its historical roots from the time of the prophet Adam. Followers of other prophets were attributed by other religious appellations as well despite being categorized as Muslims in Qur'anic terms, e.g. the followers of Jesus who were attributed by Nasraaniyyah. The term Islam, however, gained fame from the time of the prophet, Muhammed (peace be upon him). |
| Are Indians Muslim? Some Indians are Muslim. Others are Christian, Hindu, atheists, Buddhists or follow other creeds. |
| Can non-Muslims enter Islam? Yes |
| How long does it take to be a Muslim? A split second. The moment you believe in the tenets that Islam requires and have an understanding of those tenets, you would become a Muslim through such belief together with the confession of the same. |
| Does Islam have sects within its main domain? The teachings of Islam stem from a single prophet who taught the message of Allah as it was revealed to him. Much of the Islamic teachings have been recorded in narrations of the prophet Muhammed's life, teachings and practices. Muslims believe in a single God who is named Allah. However, due to juridical interpretations of the prophetic narrations and the need to infer Islamic rulings from the Qur'an and the ahaadith during different periods of time, scholars have differed on the format of many practical aspects of worship and have given diverse reasons to issues in the Islamic law. However, all Muslims adhere to the basic tenets of the faith. A few major schools of Islamic legal interpretation have stemmed from the primary Islamic community but these remain as a single brotherhood, worship in the same Masaajid, circumambulate around the same place of worship in Mecca. |
| What is the relationship between Satanism and Islam? Islam has no relationship to Satanism. Satanism is the direct extreme opposite of Islamic teachings. Islam does recognize Satanism to be an evil cult engaged in the worship of Satan through evil deeds and other pagan practices or atrocities. Islam denounces such acts and prohibits the worship of Satan. Allah, is the only being who is worthy of worship in Islam. |
| Do converts require a certificate to reflect that they are Muslims? No. However, any document in which a convert declares his/her conversion to Islam would be helpful for the purpose of identifying their persons in some communities, perhaps assist in regard to preventing them from being buried as non-Muslims, and, in a Muslim country, enable the distribution of their estate in terms of Islamic law. |
